In view of demographic change family-friendly structures are becoming increasingly important as a 'soft' factor which, among young, creative and highly qualified workers, plays a decisive role in the choice of where they wish to live and work.

Favourable conditions and an attractive environment for families to live in are a decisive locational factor. In a survey of all German rural districts and municipalities for the 2007 'Family Atlas' carried out by the Federal Ministry for the Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) the Central German Metropolitan Region was placed in the top third, with some rural districts and municipalities in the region even occupying the highest positions.
