Location
Mitten in Europa
The Central German Metropolitan Region network lies at the heart of Europe and brings together eleven cities from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
The economic power house of eastern Germany
Apart from the region of Berlin-Brandenburg it is eastern Germany's only city complex and represents the most dynamic economic part of the new federal states. The Central German Metropolitan Region is located at the interface of western and eastern Europe, which provides it with an important role in the exchange of knowledge, information and goods within the extended European Union.
A wealth and diversity of natural landscapes
Embedded among the mountain ranges of the Harz to the west, the Thuringian Forest to the south-west, the Erzgebirge to the south, the Lausitz hills to the east and the plain of the Magdeburger Börde to the north, the Central German Metropolitan Region offers a wide spectrum of varied natural country side. These stretch from the low mountain ranges on the region's periphery via the newly created lakes in former open-cast mining areas to the river valleys of the Elbe and Saale, which for the most part have retained their pristine character and contain riverside woodlands which are unique in Europe.
